I pointed at my window on the first floor of our house, from the backyard.

Neil A. and I were hiding in the bushes, so my mom didn’t see us from the living room.

That’s when I realized my mom was listening to some pretty weird music. She was dancing around the living room to heavy metal music by the Zombie band ‘DEAD-ICATION’. Wesley was watching her from the couch with mild disinterest.

‘The music is a good distraction. Should be pretty easy to get in, right?’ Neil A. asked.

‘Yup, I’ve got a plan. Come on, you’ve gotta HOIST ME UP.’

We snuck around the side of the house and I showed Neil A. a trellis that sat against the side of the house but fell a bit short of my bedroom window.

The trellis was another one of my dad’s failed attempts at gardening. It still had the corpse of the last plant weaved through the lattice.

‘Okay, here’s the plan. We both climb the trellis, then I climb on your shoulders to make up the distance between the trellis and the window. Once I’m in, I’ll get a bedsheet or something and throw that down for you to climb in with.’

Neil A. looked at the rickety trellis skeptically. ‘Uhh, sure. Okay.’

The trellis CREAKED in the least reassuring way possible as Neil A. and I started to climb.

When we reached the top I had to crab walk my way to the side to climb over Neil A.

‘Ooft.’

‘Agghhhh!’

‘Watch out—’

‘Move your foot—’

‘GURGHGJGBJ!’

After a shuffle of limbs I was standing on his shoulders.

Then I realized the flaw in my plan. I could just barely reach the window, let alone open it and haul my body through.

I’m a Zombie. My muscles have DISINTEGRATED, what can I say.

As I looked down to tell Neil A., the trellis made a loud creak.

‘Oh no,’ Neil A. said.

‘Oh yes,’ I heard a voice above me say.

I looked up to see my mom. She had pushed open the window and was leaning down, looking at me and Neil A.

‘You are in BIG TROUBLE, Zack Zombie.’

CRACK!

The withered trellis crumbled beneath us and Neil A. and I fell to the ground in a heap.

Lucky I’m already dead.
